Our Mission

We strive to strengthen emergency care systems in Africa, through leading collaborative efforts and championing advocacy. We drive the strategic research agenda, provide guidance for education and training, and facilitate the development of sustainable policies and frameworks to strengthen emergency care systems in Africa.

Our Approach

Building resilient, effective emergency care systems in Africa requires a deliberate and comprehensive approach. At AFEM our approach has six components.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

We build the capacity of emergency care professionals across Africa.

ADVOCACY

We advocate for emergency care to be prioritised by global stakeholders on global platforms.

COLLABORATION

We foster global collaborations and partnerships for emergency care development in Africa.

RESEARCH

We drive the strategic research agenda to ensure that the development of emergency care in Africa is based on evidence specific to the African context.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

We guide the development of emergency care curriculums, courses, and training programs across Africa for all tiers of the emergency care system.

POLICIES & FRAMEWORKS

We develop comprehensive policies and frameworks alongside governments and stakeholders to support the adoption of robust emergency care systems across Africa.

President: Joe Bonney

Dr. Joe Bonney completed the European Masters of Disaster Medicine in 2019 and has been accepted in the International Doctoral Program in Global Health, Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Medicine. He is a Specialist Emergency Physician at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), and heads the Research Unit of his Department.

Vice President: Dr. Joseph Kalanzi

Dr. Joseph Kalanzi is an emergency physician based in Kampala, Uganda. As a faculty member in the Emergency Medicine program at Makerere University, he is passionate about medical education, emergency care systems, and disaster medicine. With a career spanning medical training and emergency care systems development, Dr. Kalanzi is dedicated to improving access to emergency care in Uganda and beyond.

CEO: Lauren Lai King

Dr.Lauren Lai King MMed(Emerg Med), FCEM(SA), DipPEC(SA), MBBCh(WITS) is a specialist emergency medicine physician and senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Her experience in both urban and rural centres across South Africa has been pivotal in fostering her commitment to further develop emergency medicine training in South Africa. She is grateful for the opportunity to be of service within AFEM and expand her activities into Africa. Her vision is to advocate, build and support equitable, accessible and sustainable emergency care systems throughout the African region.

Secretary: Dr Komagum Faith

Dr Komagum Faith is an emergency physician currently practicing in Kampala, Uganda.

She is actively involved in emergency care education as an instructor for multiple courses including BEC, ITLS, ALS and EPALS.

She also holds a post graduate diploma in sports medicine with a focus on sports injury management and rugby medical education.

Dr Faith is passionate about advancing emergency care across Africa through education, advocacy, research and collaboration, as well as supporting the strengthening of emergency care systems across the continent.

Treasurer: Dr Meghan Botes

Dr Meghan Botes (PhD) is an emergency nurse and a nurse educator with a dichotomous passion for both of these fields. Emergency nursing is her research niche area where her doctoral study had a specific focus on emergency care in primary health care settings as well the development of the emergency nurse specialist role in the context of Southern Africa. Meghan’s teaching philosophy is underpinned by andragogy which places the focus on the learner as an adult who possesses knowledge, experience and self-motivation. The changing nursing landscape has afforded her experience in curriculum development and accreditation processes. She describes herself as a facilitator of learning and loves to learn with students. Her current research activity includes a novel national multicentre project on implementation of the World Health Organisation Basic Emergency care course for nurses in Primary Health care settings and she is passionate about advancing emergency care in vulnerable and low resourced settings.

Technical Support Team 

Dr Robert Holliman – Operational Technical Consultant

Dr Holliman MBBS, MRCP(UK), MRCEM(UK) is a specialist emergency registrar working clinically in the UK and South Africa. He is currently completing a PhD on Engaged Research within Emergency Medicine (UCT, SA) and serves as a course convenor & tutor at the University of Cape Town. After originally training in the UK, he garnered experience both in rural and urban public emergency departments across South Africa as well as spending time at various healthcare centres in countries across Africa. An ardent advocate for enhancing research capacity & global emergency care standards, his research pursuits encompass research priorities, facilitating research translation & the scholarship of engaged researcher.  

Dr Hannah Ofosua Owusu – President’s Intern

Dr Hannah Ofosua Owusu, BSc., MBChB. is a staff member of St. Joseph Hospital in Koforidua – Ghana. She is currently a third year resident in emergency medicine at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi – Ghana. Dr. Owusu is serving as the President’s intern with the African Federation for Emergency medicine. She has a vision to help find solutions to challenges facing emergency care in Africa and the world through education, research and, advocacy.

Dr Simon I. Tumusiime – Educational Technical Consultant

Dr Simon I. Tumusiime (MBchB) is a medical doctor working in Uganda. He has been actively involved in the development and implementation of emergency care guidelines and protocols in Uganda and has played a key role in human resource capacity building in emergency care across Africa through his work with the Emergency Care Society of Uganda, the African Federation for Emergency Medicine, Ministries of Health, and WHO. He is passionate about emergency care systems work, medical education, research, and innovative technologies. His ambition is to support different countries in Africa and across the world to build well-adapted, effective emergency care systems that enhance the delivery of high-quality emergency care.
